Smooth, rich, and creamy, this Alfredo sauce will be perfect over chicken, veggies, or low carb pasta! Simple, easy and less than 20 minutes to a silky sauce!
What is Alfredo sauce? Generally, it’s a creamy white sauce that is both cheesy and garlicy. It’s traditionally made with tons of dairy products, and poured over pasta.
Except for the pasta, Alfredo sauce is totally keto. The ingredients are higher in fat, and have little to zero carbs in them.
So, what’s in Alfredo sauce? What makes it keto friendly?
Alfredo sauce is traditionally comprised of heavy cream, butter, Parmesan cheese, and garlic. Add a bit of salt and pepper and BAM! Creamy, silky sauce! The dairy ingredients have little to no carbs in them, and there are very little carbs in the garlic.
Some other fun facts about Alfredo sauce:
- Alfredo is often mixed with ingredients like parsley, shrimp, garlic and chicken.
- Italian restaurant owner Alfredo di Lello is credited with ‘Alfredo sauce’. It is said that he made the first Alfredo sauce in 1914. (source)

So, how do you make a keto Alfredo sauce, anyway?
You start by melting the butter and cream together. Mix in your white pepper and salt while it’s heating up. The pan should be on medium to medium low heat to avoid scorching the cream or butter.
Using a wire whisk, mix cream, butter, and seasonings together. You will only want to stir occasionally, to allow the cream to thicken.
After about 15 minutes, the cream and butter mixture will be a smooth, silky sauce on it’s own and will have started to thicken up. At this point, you will add the Parmesan cheese and stir that in. This will add another layer of flavor, as well as helping to make a thicker sauce.
You don’t want to use powdered Parmesan cheese (the kind in the green can) for this, as it doesn’t melt as well, and can make a grainy sauce. It’s truly best to get some fresh grated Parmesan cheese, either in the package, or by purchasing the hard cheese and shredding it yourself.
After stirring in the Parmesan cheese, stir constantly just until the cheese is melted, and then allow sauce to simmer on low heat for another 5-7 minutes. It will continue to thicken up as it simmers. Avoid stirring frequently, so the cream doesn’t begin to break down. Just stir once or twice every minute to keep it from scorching.
