When you need a recovery drink, or you just want something besides plain water to nourish and hydrate your body, this berry spinach smoothie will gladly fill that role!
A great way to start your day is by eating your protein and greens. Most commonly, keto breakfasts are bacon, eggs, and maybe a cup of coffee. Bulletproof, of course.
What about smoothies? Can you still enjoy a light breakfast that doesn’t require a lot of cooking, and isn’t heavy like fats can be? Why, yes you can! You can make a keto friendly berry spinach smoothie, full of nutrients!
How do you make a berry spinach smoothie that is keto?
You start with fresh greens, add some low carb fruit, and a low carb beverage, such as almond milk. Blend it all together and you have a light, refreshing drink that is perfect for a workout recovery drink. It’s also great for breakfast, with your keto bacon and eggs.
This is really a blueberry smoothie with spinach? Or a spinach smoothie with blueberry?
Actually, it’s both. It has blueberries and spinach, along with low carb, unsweetened almond milk. It’s really one of the best almond milk smoothie recipes, as it’s so easy to make!
Are blueberries really keto? Don’t they have sugar in them?
Yes, blueberries have some natural sugar in them. While most of us avoid a lot of fruit on the keto diet, berries are one fruit that you can enjoy in moderation. Claiming a top spot on the list of Super Foods , it’s no wonder why they are keto approved.
These little balls of berry goodness are loaded with Vitamin A, C, K, B-6, B-12, Manganese, and fiber. Blueberries are a great source of antioxidants which have been found to reduce inflammation and fight cancer. All of that, and only 9 net carbs per 1/2 cup!

What about spinach? Can you put raw spinach into a smoothie?
Due to the high amount of oxalates that spinach naturally has, it may not be a good idea to eat it raw. Cooking or steaming the spinach eliminates the oxalates, which are thought to increase the chance of kidney stones.
So, how do you make a spinach smoothie without the oxalates? You will want to cook it a bit before using it. After cooking, you can freeze it in 1 cup portions for later use, if you’d like. You can also use boxed frozen spinach, if you desire. To cook spinach for smoothies:
- Gently steam the spinach in 1 teaspoon water for 1 minute.
- Press out as much water as possible from the leaves.
- Scoop in 1 cup portions on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
- Freeze for 3-4 hours, then place in an airtight ziplock bag.
- Add 1 portion per smoothie and blend.
