Are you missing potatoes on the keto diet or low carb diet? Miss them no more, my friends! Pan roasted radishes are ready, willing and able!
Do you miss potatoes on while doing keto? Rich, fluffy, creamy, crispy potatoes? I sure did! When I made red skin potatoes for my family, part of me wanted to cry inside. I really missed potatoes.
I’ve always been a meat and potatoes kinda girl, and that was how I raised my family. Going without potatoes? That was utter nonsense in every sense of the word. However, I found a great substitute that is low carb, keto friendly AND can be paleo as well. How cool is that?
What is this magical vegetable that roasts like potatoes, feels like potatoes in your mouth, yet is a perfect keto potato substitute? Radishes. They will make the perfect keto side dish.
Roasted radishes can easily take on all the aspects of your meal that potatoes did, without the carbs.
What’s so special about radishes, anyway? Aren’t they just little thinly sliced circles you take off your restaurant salad? Sure, but you may want to start eating these little peppery wonders when you see that they are full of :
- riboflavin
- Vitamin B6
- Calcium
- Dietary Fiber
- Folate
All great things that your body needs! Bonus-there is only 2 net carbs in a full cup of roasted radishes! A feel good side dish that will fill you up without filling you out, right? Roasting brings out the natural sweetness of the radishes, and with their natural peppery bite, makes them a delicious choice over potatoes!
Besides the round radishes we are using here, there are several different varieties that are easily found in grocery stores:
- French Breakfast-slightly longer versions of the common round radish-more mellow than round radishes, but still a bite when raw.
- Black Radishes-round radishes with a black exterior and white flesh. They are very sharp when raw, but deliciously mild when cooked.
- White Beauty -white inside and out, and has a very deep pungent flavor. Best when cooked, as they sweeten up a lot.
- Watermelon -so called for their watermelon like appearance when sliced, these are actually best served raw due to their beautiful color that is lost during cooking.
If you needed more convincing to try these, my uber picky hubby, the boy AND the Frenchman all agree that these roasted radishes are a make again! They are sure to be a favorite in YOUR family as well!

Hi Heather, I baked heaps of Radishes with salt, lard, coconut oil and YES. the great taste of LARD really made the difference. I realise that Potatoes these days in Australia are BLAND anyway, so radishes are FANTASTIC. I also ROASTED CELERY PIECES as well just for something DIFFERENT. a success as well.
I am so glad you like them, and thank you for sharing your idea of adding celery pieces to it. I do not use lard in any of my cooking, so I will have to just trust that you liked that flavor 😉
