Zesty, and full of flavor, this Russian dressing will make your keto Ruben sandwiches sing! Drizzle this sauce on burgers or salads, as it’s the perfect blend of sweet and savory, with a kick!
I first became familiar with the idea of Russian dressing when I was working in the restaurant back of the house. That’s the cook’s area, where the food is made. I was just beginning my training, and trying my hand at some classic sandwiches.
The turkey sandwich I wanted to make needed some zing and pep. It wasn’t quite a Rachel, as it didn’t have any sauerkraut. There was turkey, the rye bread, and the loads of melty Swiss cheese, but it was missing something. The head cook whipped up a lovely salmon colored sauce in just a few seconds that was unbelievably awesome! He called it “Thousand Island dressing taken to the Russian dressing level.”
What’s the difference between Russian dressing and Thousand Island dressing, you ask?
Russian dressing is spicier and typically has horseradish and garlic in it. Thousand Island is usually sweeter, and has an egg base and sweet pickles mixed in. Most restaurants will serve a Ruben or Rachel sandwich with Thousand Island dressing, since that is what they have on hand. However, the Russian dressing was what made those sandwiches famous. What is Russian dressing made of?
It’s a savory sauce that is traditionally a bit spicy, and a bit zesty, it is typically a blend of mayo and ketchup, with spices such as horseradish and paprika added. I toned the bitter down just a bit and left the horseradish out, and increased the hot sauce. YUMMY!
Russian dressing goes great on burgers, salads, and veggies! It’s got the right stuff in all the right places! If you have some leftover corned beef, or just need an excuse to make one, you’ll want to make yourself a tasty Reuben sandwich in a bowl, too.
