One of the all time favorite condiments, ketchup goes great on just about anything! Make your own easy ketchup that is low carb, and keto friendly!
I love ketchup. As a kid, I would put it on nearly anything. Burgers, hot dogs, french fries, and even the occasional scrambled egg. (yeah, I know…)
The tangy spices of cinnamon, all spice, cloves, garlic, onion, mustard, and cumin typically make up our well loved condiment. These warming spices are blended with tomatoe to form what we know as “ketchup”. Although perfect on it’s own, ketchup can form the basis for many other sauces.
A little bit of the history of ketchup
Ketchup was first made back in 17th century China, and was a mixture of pickled fish and spices. It was called “kôe-chiap or kê-chiap”. In the 18th century, it appeared in Malaysia and surrounding areas, and came to be called kicap or kecap. This was the sauce that English settlers took with them to the New World.
Many variations of ketchup came and went, but the tomato based sauce we know didn’t appear until the 19th century when an early recipe for “Tomata Catsup” came out, and contained anchovies keeping in line with it’s fish sauce ancestry.
In 1824, a ketchup recipe using tomatoes appeared in The Virginia Housewife (an influential 19th-century cookbook written by Mary Randolph, Thomas Jefferson’s cousin). American cooks also began to sweeten ketchup in the 19th century.
Heinz came out with their first version of the ketchup in 1876. As the Industrial Age began, more modern methods of producing food were on the horizon. Sugar is often used as a preservative, and was added to increase shelf life. While it makes a sweet product, it’s the sugar that we need to stay away from.
Recipes To Try With Homemade Ketchup
Enter in the super easy homemade ketchup with no sugar.
This version has all the deep flavors of regular ketchup, but is more on the tangy, tart side. It’s what I imagine the first tomato based ketchups would probably have tasted like. You know, well before we all had a sugar addiction to break. 🙂
Our low carb ketchup recipe uses a bit of sweetener, but we use brown sugar Swerve. Erythritol is not digested by the body, and many do not even count the carbs in them. The brown sugar version tastes just like it’s full sugar replacement, with all the depth of flavor.
Add in a bit of cinnamon, garlic, chili powder, salt, and white pepper and you have a perfect homemade, keto ketchup!
