Slightly sweet, but with a great potato texture, these keto turnip fries will be your burger’s new best friend!
Do you miss the idea of chips, or fries with a big, juicy burger? Oh, I sure do! There ARE sometimes when I will let myself indulge, but the lousy feeling afterwards usually keeps me at bay.
I miss the salty sweet of them, the crispy outside with the chewy inside texture. The warm mealy, fluffy, little sticks of happiness. It’s almost enough to make a grown woman cry. Next to ice cream, french fries are the one thing I had the most difficult time giving up on the keto diet.
Until the other day, when the Frenchman and I were testing recipes together. I say “together” because he’s in the kitchen with me, offering advice on spices or how long to try and bake something. He’s pretty handy to have around like that.
I had never tried turnips before. In my life. My grandmother always tried to get me to eat them when I was younger, but there was no way I wanted anything to do with them. YUCK! As a grown up, I now try and step out of my comfort zone a bit more and be adventurous with foods.
Other Recipes To Try
Turnips make a perfect substitute for potatoes, and these baked turnip fries were pure heaven!
How many carbs are in a turnip?
Absolutely! They have 3 net carbs, (4.18 total, with 1.2 grams fiber) per 1/2 cup serving. This makes them perfectly keto friendly.
Turnip roots also are a great source of Vitamin C, while the green tops are a good source of Vitamins A, C, and K.
Can you eat raw turnips? Are raw turnips poisonous?
Raw turnips are not poisonous. They are a member of the Brassicaceae family, a broad family of greens and vegetables which also includes cabbage, kale, brussel sprouts, etc. The root, or bulb, of the plant is often enjoyed raw in salads.
Young roots can be left with the skin on, but older roots may have a tougher skin that should be peeled.
The greens can have oxalic acid (0.21 g per 100 g), which can lead some to have kidney stones. The oxalic acid can be reduce by either boiling or steaming the greens.
Do turnips taste like potatoes?
Yes, the do. They are a wonderful vegetable that can taste like potatoes when you add a bit of salt, and resemble apples when you add a bit of sweet. For these fries, adding a bit of sugar free ketchup like this brand will make them the perfect snack!
